Autism and ADHD Assessments

We provide Autism and ADHD assessments for individuals seeking to better understand themselves and explore potential neurodivergence. With extensive experience supporting neurodivergent clients, we understand the importance of creating a safe, respectful space where each person can express their authentic self.

We recognise the nuances of internalised or less-visible presentations of Autism and ADHD, and we are mindful of the many factors—emotional, social, and systemic—that can influence someone’s decision to seek an assessment.

Our assessments are conducted within a neurodiversity-affirming framework, celebrating each person’s unique strengths and differences. We apply a trauma-informed, culturally safe, and gender-affirming approach to ensure a respectful, inclusive, and supportive experience for every individual.

At Inspired Psychology, we believe that everyone’s journey is different. Whether you are seeking assessment to better understand your neurotype, clarify your strengths, or inform future supports, we are honoured to walk alongside you in this process. Our goal is to provide meaningful insights that empower you to embrace your neurodivergent identity with confidence and self-compassion.

We are now booking child and adolescent assessments (aged 6 and upwards) as well as those for adults.

Assessment FAQ’S:

Why do you provide combined Autism and ADHD assessments?

We recommend combined assessments, as Autism and ADHD frequently co-occur.
Assessing for both simultaneously provides a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s neurodivergent identity and supports more accurate, holistic recommendations.

I only want an assessment for either Autism or ADHD. Can you provide this?

While we recommend combined assessments due to the frequent co-occurrence of Autism and ADHD, we also offer individual assessments where preferred. If you are seeking an assessment specifically for either Autism or ADHD, please contact our office to discuss your needs.

Please note: If you are seeking medication for ADHD, a separate assessment and diagnosis by a psychiatrist will be required to support access to pharmacological treatment.

What does the assessment involve? What should I expect?

Our assessment process typically includes an initial interview, completion of questionnaires, and a longer assessment session conducted in an interview-style format.

The main assessment session usually lasts between 2 to 4 hours and may be split over two appointments, depending on the type and complexity of the assessment.

Following the assessment, results are carefully reviewed and compiled into a comprehensive report. Feedback is provided in a separate session, during which we discuss the findings and answer any questions you may have. The written report is then emailed to you for your records.

Occasionally, additional information may be required to complete the assessment. If this is the case, we will discuss this with you openly and collaboratively.

All assessments are conducted within a neurodiversity-affirming framework, and we are committed to creating a respectful, validating, and positive assessment experience for every individual.

Can I complete the assessment via telehealth?

Face-to-face assessments are scheduled where possible. If preferred, we can complete adult assessments via a secure video-conferencing platform. If completed via video, the assessment requires access to a computer with camera accessibility, and clear video footage throughout. We work with each individual person to explore the most suitable options, and support assessment accessibility.

Do I need to be a current therapy client at Inspired Psychology, or do I have to continue as a therapy client?

Of course not! We welcome referrals from both current clients and those new to the practice. We have a team of clinicians experienced in working with neurodivergent children, adolescents, and adults, and can offer ongoing therapy if this is requested. There is however no obligation to continue accessing therapy services after the assessment.

What if I need to access medication?

Please note that psychologists are not able to prescribe medication.
If you are seeking access to medication, particularly for ADHD, you will need to be referred to a psychiatrist for a separate assessment. This is an independent process and typically involves undergoing further assessment in line with the psychiatrist’s requirements, which may include additional questionnaires, interviews, fees, and wait times.

If requested, we are happy to assist by sharing your assessment results with your GP to support the referral process and ensure continuity of care.

If I require any additional assessments, can you provide these?

We provide a range of assessments and can individualise these as required. Our office staff will be happy to assist in answering any questions.

I would like to access support through the NDIS or Centrelink. Can I use the report for this purpose?

Please note that completing an assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis, nor does it ensure approval for funding or support services.

Assessment reports can be used as part of the supporting evidence for applications to funding bodies such as the NDIS, DSP, or SACAT. However, additional documentation from other treating health professionals is often required.

If you are seeking an assessment specifically for the purpose of an NDIS, DSP, or SACAT application, we recommend discussing this with our administration team prior to booking, so we can ensure the process aligns with your needs and the relevant requirements.

Can I bring a support person with me?

You are welcome to bring a support person with you, or anything that helps you to feel more comfortable, such as a fidget or sensory item. Pets are always welcome to join if completing via telehealth.

Do I need my assessment completed by a clinical psychologist?

All psychologists can assess and diagnose, if appropriately trained and experienced. Some funding bodies and organisations have policies regarding evidence provided, and may request that specific clinicians complete these. We are happy to discuss these requirements and options with you at any time.

Can I use my NDIS funding for the assessment?

NDIS funding cannot be used for diagnostic assessments. Functional assessments may be completed using NDIS funding, to better inform supports. To find out if your funding will cover an assessment, you may need to speak with your plan manager or support coordinator.
